LABORER / EQUIPMENT OPERATOR II

Description Minimally supervised; performs heavy manual labor; drives grader, heavy trucks and operates all equipment to maintain County roads; and performs related work as required.
Essential Duties Must be capable of regular and predictable attendance at a specified location in order to perform assigned tasks.
Must perform all work of the Equipment Operator I and in addition operate an end loader to load materials such as sand, salt and rock Drives trucks with attached oil distributor and chip spreader over designated area Drives truck and/or grader with attached snow plow blades and hopper spreader to remove snow, ice, and spread sand and salt on road surfaces Operates self-propelled grader to spread and level dirt, gravel and stone to grade specifications Plows snow from roadway by making successive passes with grader Greases, changes oil and lubricates machines operated to maintain in good working order Excavates ditches using a hydraulic backhoe Follows proper safety procedures and takes pro-active measures to avoid potential harm to equipment and personnel.
Performs routine inspections of equipment to ensure safety and operability.
Performs manual labor and other duties as required.
Administrative and Functional Supervision is received from Road Superintendent and Road Supervisor.
No functional or administrative supervision is exercised over support staff.
High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
At least five (5) years or more construction experience, with road and/or bridge maintenance or construction experience preferred.
Must have and maintain a valid Iowa Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Type A and be insurable under the County's guidelines.
Must also have CDL Type A - Tanker Endorsement or able to obtain the endorsement within six (6) months from date of hire.
Demonstrated ability to operate road and bridge maintenance and construction equipment.
Must regularly lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
